Bridging the gap was a semester long project which study urban conditions that are subject to design, engaging the processes of urbanization, and introducing the circumstances under which urban projects are pursued as professional activities.
The purpose of this project aimed to redevelop Ottawa’s train yard district. The proposal consists of two parts. It first introduces the current state of the city through maps and demographics. And using those studies will dictate the design proposal for a new district. The second section will introduce a Design Action Zone plan for a business district that articulates the physical spaces implied by the issues in the site. The goal of the new district is to use a variety of public and private spaces by using new and existing infrastructure, buildings, and landscapes to stimulate economic growth and activate the social dimension.
Our Process
The maps and demographics presented in this section represent the area of change. In the first section, we explore a land-use study of the current business and industrial districts and study recreational and community spaces in the city. We then looked at the history and current demographics in the site to determine the design and plan of a new business district. Based on this, we created graphics that illustrate the following goals: 1) Creating North/South connections for pedestrian & transit activities. 2) Maximizing density along major roads 3) Providing sufficient green & recreational spaces throughout the site. 4) Reworking the current fabric to create shared interactive spaces for both residents and businesses.
